The buggy was moving west on Territorial Road when it was hit from behind by a woman driving a GMC Terrain, according to police.

The two occupants of the buggy, a 50-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman, both from Montgomery, were critically injured in the crash, according to police.

Both were airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for treatment, where their condition was unknown, according to police.

Police did not release any information on the animals involved in the crash.

The driver of the Terrain, a 38-year-old woman from Hillsdale, was not injured in the crash, according to police.

Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol in the crash, which is still under investigation.

Police said serious Amish buggy crashes continue to happen across Michigan, and many are preventable.

"If you're driving through an area where horse-drawn buggies are common, slow down, stay focused and put the distractions away. Give buggies plenty of space and be patient—they're sharing the road with you," police said in a statement. "A few extra seconds of patience, a little less speed and your full attention can help prevent a life-changing crash."
