A well-known metro Detroit pizzeria has landed on a nationwide list of the best pizza shops.
Buddy's Pizza was selected to represent the Old Dominion on Food & Wine's list of the best award-winning pizza shops across each state.
In its selection process, the outlet sought pizzerias recognized across a variety of media, including major pizza competitions, reader polls, ranking lists and local news outlets.
Gus Guerra founded Buddy's at the corner of Six Mile Road and Conant Street in Detroit in 1946.
Editors with Food and Wine magazine noted that's where Guerra made the first known square-shaped Detroit-style pizza, which became a trend across Michigan and beyond.
They added the Detroit pizza maker "has stayed true to its late owner with national recognition to back it up."
Buddy's Detroit-style square pizzas are typically topped with pepperoni first, then brick cheese and sauce.
The restaurant now has 23 locations, with most in the Detroit area. There are also spots in Grand Rapids, Okemos and Portage.
