Former executive director of the Detroit Health Department Abdul El-Sayed is battling former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers for the seat.
El-Sayed won a tough primary against U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, while Rogers ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
Democratic Sen. Gary Peters chose not to seek reelection in 2026. He was first elected in 2014.
Here are the unofficial live election results:
Abdul El-Sayed - 527,769
Mike Rogers - 426,060
Precincts reporting - 20 percent
The seat is open because Democratic Senator Gary Peters decided not to seek a third term. Democrats have the seat since Carl Levin defeated Republican Senator Robert Griffin in 1978. Levin served for 36 years before Peters succeeded him in 2015.
El-Sayed has largely been looked at as the more progressive candidate. He firmly stands on Medicare for all, affordable housing and worker bargaining rights.
Rogers, on the other hand, has talked about lowering costs for Michiganders and bringing manufacturing jobs to America.
Rogers has earned the backing of President Donald Trump, though he has broken with the president on several key issues, including tariffs and the Iran War.
Overall, the Republicans have not won a Senate race in Michigan since 1994, when Spencer Abraham captured the state's other seat in the upper chamber of Congress.
Election results are unofficial until certified by election authorities.
