MICHIGAN — Tudor Dixon said Wednesday morning she called Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to concede the state's gubernatorial race.

"I called Governor Whitmer this morning to concede and wish her well," Dixon's statement read. "Michigan’s future success rests not in elected officials or government, but all of us. It is incumbent upon all of us to help our children read, support law enforcement, and grow our economy."

Whitmer, who vowed to "fight like hell" to protect abortion rights in Michigan, was leading Dixon by 8 percent points with 85 percent of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press, who called the race shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Speaking in front of a cheering crowd at Motor City Casino in Detroit, Whitmer highlighted a second-term agenda that included investing in public education, strengthening infrastructure and defending reproductive freedom.

“Building a Michigan where everyone can get ahead is what really matters right now, more than ever,” Whitmer said. “We are going to move this state forward and I'm excited for all the work we’re going to do together."
