EMU Professors Reach Tentative Deal, Return To Classroom

Faculty were striking for better wages and health care benefits​ after their contract expired last week.

YPSILANTI, MI — Eastern Michigan University announced Sunday night it reached a tentative deal to get professors back in classrooms after "marathon bargaining sessions," the university announced Sunday night.

"Faculty are returning to the classroom and a full schedule of classes will take place tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 12, beginning at 8 a.m. Details about the agreement will be provided in future updates."

Eastern Michigan University professors walked off the job Wednesday after voting to unionize the previous day. They were striking for better wages and health care benefits after their contract expired last week.

The deal comes after a Washtenaw County judge rejected a motion from the university to force the professors back into the classrooms.

Students missed about three days of class during the strike and should email their professors to get caught up.

"We could not have done this without all of the support from students the community and the union organizers," The union tweeted late Sunday night.
