F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes In Northern MI: Police

The pilot was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition, according to police.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI — A military fighter jet crashed in northern Michigan on Thursday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon near County Road 633 and Blair Townhall Road in Blair Township, which is south of Traverse City in Grand Traverse County, police said.

Military officials told CBS Detroit the pilot ejected and parachuted to the ground. The pilot was then taken to a neaby hopsital and listed in stable condition, accoridng to police.

Police said there were no other injuries.

It was unclear what caused the plane crash.

Video posted to social media by UpNorthLive showed a plume of black rising from a rural field where the plane crashed.

Police said the crash caused a hazardous chemical spill, which triggered the evacuation order for all businesses and properties within a one-mile radius of the crash.

That order has since been lifted.

The military plane, which police confirmed was from Texas, was participating in training exercises at a National Guard Base in Alpena, according to the Associated Press.
