Juneteenth 2024: What's Open, Closed In MI
Many government offices and federal institutions, but major restaurants, grocery and retail stores will remain open on the holiday.
MICHIGAN — Many government offices and federal institutions, such as banks and post offices will be closed Wednesday across Michigan, but major restaurants, grocery and retail stores will remain open on the holiday.
Bank branches that will be closed on Juneteenth include Bank of America, Truist, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo. USPS will also be closed and mail won't be delivered Wednesday, but UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available on Juneteenth.
Many retail stores, such as Target, Walmart, Kroger and Costco, as well as many others, will stay open on the federal holiday this year. Pharmacies, such as CVS and Walgreens will also remain open on Juneteenth.

Juneteenth, June 19, is a national holiday that commemorates the day in 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, when word finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas that they were free.

Also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth is the oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making it a federal holiday, the first since the addition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
