Forecasters expect highs in the 50s by the end of the week in Michigan, so how much snow can we expect in Michigan this winter?

MICHIGAN — After a bitter cold winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in some parts across Michigan last week, temperatures across the state can hit 50 degrees by the end of the week.

With warmer temperatures on the horizon, how much snow can we expect in Michigan this winter? Here is a look at the latest snow forecasts and winter weather predictions.

Temperatures in Michigan will be just around 40 degrees on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and some light snow flurries are possible. But come the weekend, highs are once again expected in the 50s.

El Niño conditions are already inevitable, according to a consensus of scientists, with sea temperatures in the Pacific several degrees warmer than usual. This warmer water impacts what weather is carried on the winds to the United States.

The warmer winds could mean a milder winter season with anywhere between 25 and 50 percent less than normal snowfall across the Midwest, according to AccuWeather forecasters.

"December should be mild overall across the Midwest and Great Lakes with just a couple of brief, chilly periods," AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok explained said.

AccuWeather forecasters expect the pattern to bleed over into the start of 2024, but the season could then take a "blustery turn during the second half of winter." Forecasters suggest there could be a shift in the polar vortex, allowing frigid Arctic air across the central and midwest parts of the U.S. late in the winter.

Moreover, if the Great Lakes remain primarily ice-free during the first half of the winter, blasts of bitterly cold air later in the winter could trigger some spells of lake-effect snow, according to AccuWeather forecasters.
