MI Swimmers Can Now Order Poolside Alcoholic Drinks In Public Pools

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill Tuesday, allowing alcoholic drinks in Michigan's public pools.

MICHIGAN — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill Tuesday allowing bars and restaurants to serve alcohol in public swimming pools.

The House bill aims to loosen the restrictions on food and alcohol in consumption in public swimming pools, a move would Whitmer said could "create entrepreneurial opportunities that allow public pool operators to maximize business heading into a Pure Michigan summer."

"The Bavarian Inn Zehnder Family applauds Governor Whitmer and the Legislators for approving the swim up bar legislation," Bavarian Inn Lodge Michael Keller Zehnder said in a news release. "This will enable hospitality business operators the opportunity to provide a new experience for their guests which will boost the Michigan Tourism Industry."

State Representative John Cherry D-Flint and Rep. Rodney Wakeman, R-Frankenmuth sponsored the legislation.

"Offering unique experiences for families and visitors in a safe, well-regulated manner is an important goal as we look toward the future of Michigan’s hospitality industry," Cherry said. "I’m proud to work with my colleagues to offer these new opportunities for economic expansion, giving a boost to mid-Michigan businesses."

In order to serve the alcohol in public swimming pools. businesses will have to pay an annual fee of $350. Businesses can also only sale the alcohol in areas not accessible to minors and adults can only posses the drinks in the pool area. Servers are also required to complete a special server training program.
