Whitmer said in a statement that her father died overnight and remembered him as a mentor, steadfast supporter and the person who encouraged her to pursue a career in public service.

“He held a lot of impressive positions in his long life,” Whitmer said. “But for me, he was just dad.”

Richard Whitmer served as commerce secretary in the 1970s under then-Gov. William Milliken, a Republican. He later joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, where he rose to become chief executive officer.

In her statement, the Democratic governor credited her father with shaping her confidence and values, recalling his presence at key moments throughout her life — from her first speech in elementary school to her addresses as governor.

“He was the one who always saw my potential and believed in me,” she said.

Whitmer said her father encouraged her to consider public service while she was a student at Michigan State University, steering her toward an internship at the state Capitol after she initially dreamed of a career in sports broadcasting.

“I haven’t looked back since,” she said.

She also reflected on his role as a grandfather, describing him as quick to laugh, generous with advice and deeply proud of his children and grandchildren.

Richard Whitmer is survived by his sister; his three children, Gretchen, Richard and Liz; and seven grandchildren.

The governor said she is grieving but grateful for the time they shared and the lessons he passed on.

“He was my best friend, most trusted counselor, and next-door neighbor until I moved into the Governor’s Residence,” Whitmer said. “I would not be where I am and who I am without my dad.”
