Michigan's 20 Safest Cities Ranked: Report

MICHIGAN — Is your city among the safest in Michigan?

A new report ranked the top 20 safest cities in Michigan right now. SafeWise, a security product review platform, looked at FBI crime statistics for cities in Michigan to compile its 10th annual Safest Cities report.

Roughly 41 percent of Michiganders said they worry about their safety on a regular basis, and they may have a good reason, since Michigan ranked ninth in states with the highest violent crime rates, according to SafeWise.

Moreover, violent crime in Michigan slightly rose year over year—from 5.0 incidents per 1,000 residents to 5.1, according to SafeWise.

Property crime also increased from 13.8 to 15.7 incidents per 1,000 residents, but that puts Michigan as the tenth-lowest state for property crime, according to SafeWise.

Michiganders are also concerned about gun violence in the mitten state, as 56 percent said they were highly worried about gun violence, up from 49 percent in the previous survey, according to SafeWise.

The rankings were based on FBI crime data. Cities and jurisdictions across the country voluntarily report the information through the FBI Summary Reporting System and National Incident-Based Reporting System. The most recent FBI data was released in October 2023 and accounts for crimes reported in 2022. SafeWise also used population thresholds in its reporting, according to the company.
