This Is MI's Best Restaurant, New Ranking Says
This Detroit restaurant in Midtown is the best place to eat in Michigan, according to a new ranking.
MICHIGAN — A Detroit restaurant made USA TODAY’s list of the best restaurants in the country.
USA TODAY released a new ranking of the best restaurants in the U.S. on Thursday, and Selden Standard in Detroit was the only Michigan restaurant on the list.
Selden Standard, located on 2nd Avenue in Midtown, opened in 2014 and brought a fresh culinary perspective to a neighborhood that's known for its fast-casual and takeout spots, rather than upscale dining establishments.

The restaurant is well-known for its charred veggies, wild-caught fish and handmade pastas.
"In the decade that followed, the New American restaurant has become a pillar in midtown, which is now a hotbed for some of the city’s most popular restaurants, and a beacon for Detroit’s culinary scene at large," a USA TODAY food critic said. "The space’s modern aesthetic serves as an ideal backdrop for a rotating menu of simply prepared seasonal ingredients, house-made pastas and breads and Michigan-raised meat charred in a wood-fired hearth."

The Selden Standard team was nominated for six James Beard nominations in 2015 and was named the Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Restaurant of the Year. The restaurant was also named a 2024 semi-finalist for James Beard Outstanding Restaurant.
