MI Man Run Over, Killed After Tractor Slips Into Gear: Sheriff

A Monroe County man died Sunday after a tractor he was working on ran over him in Bedford Township, officials said.

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI — A Monroe County man died Sunday after a tractor he was working on ran over him in Bedford Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Elmer Jones, 65, from Temperance, was working on his John Deere Loader Backhoe JD300 Tractor at a home in the 9100 block of Summerfield Road near Temperance Road at 2:56 p.m. when the tractor shifted into gear and started accelerating.

The tractor then struck Jones, knocked him to the ground and ran over him, officials said.

Jones was taken to a hospital in Toledo, Ohio, where he died, officials said.

After the tractor ran over Jones, it continued moving, hitting a tree and fence, before ultimately coming to rest after hitting a neighboring barn, officials said.

Investigators do not know why the tractor started moving while Jones was working on it, officials said. Investigators also said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Officials were still investigating the crash and asked anyone with information to call police at 734-240-7541.
