Most Injured In MI Fiery I-96 Wreck Released From Hospitals: Police

WEBBERVILLE, MI — All but two of the 17 people that were injured in a massive weekend fiery wreck on Interstate 96 in Webberville have been released from the hospital, according to Michigan State Police.

The driver of the semi truck that caused the crash was still hospitalized at University of Michigan Hospital, according to police.

The crash happened at 11:42 p.m. on westbound Interstate 96 by the Michigan 52 overpass near Webberville, according to police.

That stretch of the freeway on both sides was temporality closed down Saturday night so DTE Energy crews could pull power lines across the freeway, according to police.

The closure caused a backup along that stretch of the freeway, according to police.

Just as crews lifted the shutdown in the westbound lanes, a semi truck smashed into multiple stopped cars in the left lane, according to police.

The impact of the crash caused the semi truck and multiple vehicles to catch fire, according to police.

Four people were killed in the crash, according to police.

Another 17 people were taken to UM Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Hospital in Lansing for serious injuries, according to police.

Troopers believe the man driving the semi truck did not see the backup on the freeway, according to police.

Troopers said roughly 15 vehicles, including the semi truck were involved in the crash.

Troopers said both directions of the freeway is "indefinitely" closed while crews clean up debris and inspect the bridge for damages. It is not clear when the freeway will reopen.
