Northern MI Hotel In Area Known For Snowmobiling Will Close For Winter

Hotel officials said it's difficult to keep the facility open, while hoping for a few good weekends of snow.

CADILLAC, MI — A popular northern Michigan hotel will close for the winter, citing a lack of snowmobile weather in the area.

Lake Cadillac Resort in Cadillac, known as a popular destination for winter tourists because of the snowmobile trails in the area, said on Facebook it will close for the season on Sunday, and then reopen again in March.

"The lack of winter tourism, coupled with the historically low amount of snowfall, makes it difficult to operate at full capacity in the winter months," the post said. "Snowmobilers used to be a large part of winter business in Cadillac West, now we are lucky to get a handful of weekends where there is even enough snow to ride on."

Hotel officials said it's difficult to keep a 55-room property open 24/7, while hoping for a few good weekends of snow.

"The utility costs alone outweigh any potential benefit of trying to stay open," officials said.

By closing the hotel, officials said they will be able to keep and transfer their employees to other facilities. Hotel employees will be transferred to work at The Pines Sports Bar and Bowling Center and Lake Cadillac Party Store during the winter months, the post said.
