NWS Confirms Tornado Touched Down In SW Michigan

A tornado touched down in southwest Michigan on Wednesday night when severe thunderstorms rolled through the area, forecasters said.

COLON, MI — A tornado touched down in southwest Michigan on Wednesday night when severe thunderstorms rolled through the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down at 11:09 p.m. near Colon, which is just north of the Indiana border.

The twister's max width was 50 yards and it was on the ground for 2.92 miles with a peak estimated wind speed of 90 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

"A tornado quickly developed almost directly over a storage facility on the east side of Colon. Garage doors were blown in and then a significant loss of roof decking and metal covering occurred," National Weather Forecasters said. "This wood and metal debris was lofted, twisted, and deposited both to the east and north up to 200 yards away in nearby fields."

No injuries were reported by officials.

The twister was a part of a larger weather system that blew in from the Chicago area, where multiple tornadoes touched down, according to the National Weather Service.
