Overnight Storms Flood Detroit Area Roads, More Rain On The Way: NWS

Some areas in the region could see an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain by Saturday morning, according to the weather service.​

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Overnight storms flooded many metro Detroit roadways, and there is more rain on the way, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms moved across the region early Friday morning and dumped between 2 inches and 3 inches of rain amid hot and humid temperatures, according to forecasters.

Officials reported heavy flooding along Interstate 696 at 11 Mile Road, and at Interstate 94 early Friday morning. There was also flooding on Interstate near 12 Mile Road, officials said.

All northbound lanes on the Southfield Freeway at Grand River in Detroit were closed Friday morning due to flooding, but have since reopened, officials said.

Other areas that saw significant flooding include Livonia, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Roseville and St. Clair Shores, among others.

The overnight storms also knocked out power to more than 3,000 DTE Energy customers across metro Detroit, according to the utility.

More storms are expected in the southeastern Michigan region throughout Friday, according to the weather service.

Forecasters do not believe the storms will be severe, but warned they could produce heavy downpours. Some areas in the region could see an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain by Saturday morning, according to the weather service.

Warm and humid conditions are expected to continue through Saturday when heat indices will be near 90 degrees again across southeastern Michigan, according to the weather service.

A cold front is expected to move through southeastern Michigan late Sunday and bring relief from the heat and humidity, according to the weather service.

Highs next week will be in the 70s with lows dropping into the 50s in some areas across southeastern Michigan, according to the weather service.
