September is Save Your Photos Month

It's time to make digitizing, organizing and backing up your photo collection a priority.

September is Save Your Photos Month (http://www.saveyourphotos.org/), a time when photo organizers make a special effort to help people understand the importance of protecting their print and digital photos. Americans take more than one trillion photos a year (http://blog.infotrends.com/?p=21310), and those pictures rarely leave the phone, camera or computer. Protecting your photo collection keeps your family's story alive for future generations.

Cherish Your Photos founder Cheri Warnock sees two distinct threats to family photos today. “Print photos and slides sit in boxes and ‘sticky’ albums with the threat of time, humidity, fire, and flood destroying memories forever. Current digital-first photos sit on phones, cameras, and computers and are at risk of technology failure,” she said. Instead of getting to it “someday,” making photo organization a priority will ensure precious memories are not lost forever. Having backup copies, using acid-free photo boxes, and digitizing slides before they deteriorate further are all critical steps to having a more permanent photo collection.

Besides safely backing up photos, there are many other advantages to having your pictures organized. Getting your hands on just the picture you want to use for Throwback Thursday, giving an Alzheimer’s patient a photo book of memories to review daily, showing a child their place in family history, and remembering fun times every time you look at a framed photo are just a few reasons to organize your pictures. Make time to start organizing your photos today, or contact a photo organizer listed on the Association of Personal Photo Organizers website at http://www.appo.org.
