These Are The Creepiest, Most Haunted Places In MI
What's the scariest, most haunted place in Michigan? Thrillist, Business Insider, Forbes and HGTV have thoughts.
MICHIGAN — Haunted houses around the neighborhood are great Halloween fun for impressionable children, but Michiganders seeking an authentic scare might want to check out South Manitou Island.
That’s according to Thrillist, a travel and entertainment media outlet that recently released its list of the 50 (one for each state) most haunted, scariest places in America.
A handful of other media outlets have also compiled a list of creepy, haunted places in Michigan, showing there’s no shortage of places to get the daylights scared out of you.

Of South Manitou Island, the Thrillist editors said:
"16 miles offshore from Lake Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula, South Manitou is home to 300-foot sand dunes, deserted shores, and empty campgrounds," the magazine said. "And with respect to the abandoned buildings of Detroit and Flint, it’s about as creepy as you can get in Michigan."

The popular magazine cited two of the island's legends, in which one is to believe that a ship of cholera-stricken passengers stopped at the island, and the sailors buried them in a mass grave while some were still alive.
The other legend revolves around the SS Francisco Morazan, which ran aground on the island's coast in 1960, and a young boy died trying to explore the shipwreck on his own.
The magazine also said that voices are often heard hallowing from the island's two cemeteries and through a cedar forest.
Business Insider says Detroit Masonic Temple is the most haunted in Michigan.
"From cold spots and doors slamming to odd shadows, the Detroit Masonic Temple reportedly has it all," Business Insider said of Detroit Masonic Temple.
The magazine also cited a famous ghost story of George D. Mason, one of the building's architects, who haunts building.
HGTV says Mackinac Island is the most haunted in Michigan.
"The site of two major battles during the War of 1812 and a host of other violent events over the years, this picturesque island is actually a hotbed of paranormal activity," HGTV said of the island.
The station also cited a witch hunt that happened in the 1700s and early 1800s when seven women were thrown into the water with rocks tied to their feet.
Forbes says Kalamazoo’s Henderson Castle is the most haunted in Michigan.
"The original proprietors, Frank and Mary Henderson; along with Clare Burleigh; a war veteran; and an unidentified young girl and dog, are believed to inhabit the mansion," Forbes said of Kalamazoo’s Henderson Castle.
