Whitmer Lauds SCOTUS Ruling On Trump's Illegal Tariffs

By a 6-3 vote Friday, the justices said the president violated federal law by imposing sweeping tariffs around the world.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer weighed in on the Supreme Court's decision to strike down President Donald Trump's far-reaching global tariffs on Friday.

"Today’s Supreme Court decision is a decisive and welcome step forward," Whitmer said. "The administration's tariffs have driven up costs on cars, groceries, energy, and housing, causing massive uncertainty for families and businesses. Last year, America had its biggest manufacturing trade deficit ever, leading to job losses and production cuts."

Whitmer said she's hopeful the ruling will force Congress and the President to work together on strategic trade policy.

"Going forward, we need a trade policy that brings jobs back home, lowers costs, and reduces uncertainty for families and businesses," Whitmer said.

The court ruled in a 6-3 decision that tariffs imposed under an emergency powers law, including the sweeping "reciprocal" tariffs Trump levied on nearly every other country are illegal. The ruling is seen as a major blow to the president.

In the past, Trump has repeatedly described the case as one of the most important in U.S. history, claiming the country is "screwed" if the tariffs are struck down.

The majority opinion was written by Chief Justice John Roberts. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh dissented.
