Mental Attitude: Childhood Stomach Pain Could Indicate Anxiety in Adulthood. Researchers followed up with 332 young adults who had a history of chronic abdominal pain as children. They found 51% had an anxiety disorder compared to 20% in the control group. The study also noted 40% of the children with stomach pain went on to experience depression in adulthood. Pediatrics, August 2013
Health Alert: Higher Risk of Autism Linked to Induced Labor. Researchers analyzed birth and educational records of over 625,000 children and have found a connection between induction or augmentation of childbirth and an increased risk of autism. The two interventions the researchers looked into were induction to stimulate uterine contractions and augmentation, which increases the strength, duration, or frequency of uterine contractions. JAMA Pediatrics, August 2013
Diet: Magnesium Essential in Diet. Magnesium is involved in several metabolic functions in the human body. Some functions include contraction and relaxation of muscles, enzymatic reactions, production and transport of energy, and production of protein. Dietary magnesium comes from vegetables (such as dark green, leafy vegetables), fruits, nuts, legumes, seeds, soy products, and whole grains. MedlinePlus, April 2013
Exercise: Long-Term Exercise Improves Sleep. Exercising just once will not guarantee a restful slumber, but researchers report that long-term exercise (>4 months) can improve sleep for insomnia sufferers. Data was gathered from 11 sedentary women ages 57-70 years of age with insomnia who exercised over a 16-week period. At the end of the study, improvements were noted in sleep, mood, and vitality. Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, August 2013
Chiropractic: Clinical Specialties. Chiropractors can obtain postdoctoral training in a variety of clinical disciplines and specialties available through accredited colleges and specialty councils. Programs include applied chiropractic sciences, family practice, industrial consulting, neurology, nutrition, orthopedics, pediatrics, radiology, and rehabilitation. Wellness/Prevention: Money Motivates Employees to Lose Weight. Financial incentives can be a very effective tool in encouraging employees to lose. A study discovered that the best weight loss programs required employees to pay an upfront participation fee that was refunded to them as they lowered their weight.
