Great Escapes: Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

A piece of artwork can transport you to another time, place or state of mind and – for harried parents – experiencing art can provide a much-needed respite from workaday life.

Luckily, our region is rich in cultural resources such as art galleries, music venues and shops where you can create your own artwork. Here are a few ideas to plan your escape into the world of creativity:

• The inside the has two pluses, in addition to its ever-changing art displays: It is free to visit and, for most residents, it's within strolling distance. The current exhibit, , ends Thursday. The next show, Painting and Sculpture, will begin March 28 and run through May 5. 
• If you prefer music over visual media, check out the in Berkley. The downtown mainstay is the perfect place to set your inner artist free during a music lesson. Who knows? Maybe this summer you could be that oh-so-cool mom who picks up a guitar by the campfire and softly strums an old folk tune as your friends and family join in, singing the chorus under the stars.
• If you like hands-on art, try in Ferndale. Grab your girlfriends and a bottle of wine for a creative way to unwind. You can spend the evening painting with a local artist at the studio and then take home your masterpiece to enjoy.
•  Over in Royal Oak, is featuring a new collection by Dr. Jack Kevorkian. The six signed and numbered posters provide an escape into a surreal Dali-esque world. Take your time reviewing Kevorkian's works and then tour the contemporary arts and crafts gallery. Artwork from all over the world is featured in the 3,100-square-foot historic building dating back to 1926. The gallery is open seven days a week. For more information, call 248-546-8810.
•  in Clawson is more than just a framing shop. It is also a venue where local and touring artists exhibit their works. The 14 Mile Road location makes the perfect place for art enthusiasts to stop in for a look around and then stroll over to Noble Fish or Black Lotus for lunch to talk about the latest exhibit.
