Huntington Woods Pool Opens for the Season

With temperatures like these, who isn’t ready to hit the pool?

Thankfully, after a week that’s seen temps soar through the 80s, the pool at the is opening this weekend.

The pool will open for the season at 11 a.m. Saturday, just in time for the holiday weekend, and it’s expected to draw a full crowd.

“Typically, the Fourth of July is pretty darn busy, but I think this year Memorial Day will be just as busy,” said Mary Gustafson, Huntington Woods program coordinator and aquatic director.

Though it’s only happened three times before, Gustafson said she wouldn’t be surprised if the pool reached its capacity of 480 swimmers and a line formed on opening day.

“It’s just so warm,” she said.

The outdoor pool features two pools in one, with a zero-depth entry pool (similar to the beach at a lake) and custom-made water features such as kiddie bubblers, shooting lemon drops, a waterfall umbrella, two slides and a splashdown area. There’s also a competitive swimming and diving area, which features track-style starting platforms, tiled racing lanes and a 1-meter diving board with a 12-foot diving well.

For Memorial Day weekend, the pool will be open 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Saturday-Monday before resuming regular hours.

Pool schedule

While the pool schedule fluctuates throughout the season, Gustafson gave an overview of the programs and hours coming up. Hours toward the end of the summer will be announced soon.

Here’s a look at the schedule so far:

Weekends: The pool will be open from 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. for all swimmers during the weekends while the pool is open for the season, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day (Sept. 3).

May 29-June 13: Open swim during this period will be 3:30-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with swim team practices 7-8:30 p.m., leaving just the shallow end and the slides open during these times.

June 14-17: On these days, the pool will be open 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m.

June 18-Aug. 12: General swim will be 1-8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with regular weekend hours. Preschool swim for little ones and their parents will be 10:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Aug. 13-Sept. 3: Gustafson said the pool is expected to open around noon or 1 p.m. during this period, depending on staff availability. The pool will remain open until around 8:30 p.m.

The 2012 rates for the Huntington Woods pool are listed below. The Recreation office will be open Memorial Day weekend 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to sell passes.
