The City of Huntington Woods is accepting applications for the position of:
LABORER in the Department of Public Works
This individual will assist in the maintenance and repair of City property; operate motor vehicles; operate a variety of equipment; perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks; perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities & Essential Duties and Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following duties. These examples do not include all of the duties which this employee may be expected to perform and are only illustrations of the types of work that may be required. The omission of the specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the position.
1. Performs required labor as part of a crew for basic road repair duties including by not limited to hot/cold patching, catch basin repairs, traffic line painting, concrete repair, leaf pick-up duties and yard labor.
2. Assists in the maintenance of the City water and sewer system including but not limited to water main repair, valve replacement, thawing water service, replacing water meters, ditch digging, sewer cleaning and repair.
3. Operates a variety of small equipment, insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use; refers any defects or needed repairs to the supervisor.
4. Operates City vehicles for the purpose of rubbish pickup, to run errands, loading & hauling.
5. Performs routine yard maintenance as needed.
6. Performs all duties in conformance with recognized safety standards as required by local, state and federal laws and regulations.
7. Performs all other duties as assigned.
8. Works under the supervision of a crew leader/supervisor/manager or director.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities for Employment:
All of the knowledge, skills and abilities are following are essential. An employee in this position, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:
• Knowledge of the safety rules needed to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment belonging to the City.
• Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in the maintenance, construction and repair activities.
• Knowledge of the City and Department rules, regulations and policies governing the operation of the Public Works Department.
• Skill (interpersonal) to work with other employees and the general public.
• Skill in the operation of hand tools and equipment, small motor vehicles.
• Skill in listening and referring accurate information.
• Ability to work overtime when needed.
• Ability to read, see and hear in order to understand equipment operating instructions in English. Vision requirements include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions given in English in order to successfully complete tasks assigned.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time when assisting in routine duties.
• Ability to frequently lift and move 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds.
Qualifications:
• Graduation from an accredited High School or GED Certification.
• Valid Michigan Drivers' License with CDL Class B & N endorsements.
• Some experience operating small vehicles and hand operated equipment.
• Must have an operating cell phone that can be used to contact the employee after hours and during the weekends.
• Must be available for overtime call-in when requested.
Drug testing
• The successful applicant must submit to a pre-employment drug test.
• All employees carrying a CDL endorsement will be subject to random drug testing throughout the year.
