Birmingham Doctor Pleads Guilty to Fraud in Surgery Scam

Dr. Aria Sabit is accused of not surgically implanting devices into patients but still charging their insurance companies for it.

A Birmingham doctor pleaded guilty to fraud charges last week in two separate cases, according to a C&G News report.

Dr. Aria Sabit, 39, is accused of performing lumbar spinal fusion surgeries without placing medical devices in patients but still billing insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid for them, the report stated. Sabit is said to have bilked $11 million out of the agencies since beginning his practice four years ago, the report added.

Sabit pleaded guilty to four counts of health care fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and one count of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, the report stated.

Sabit was arrested on these charges in 2014, and his first court date was Dec. 1, the report stated. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 15, the report added.
