The rate increase is designed to encourage office workers to park elsewhere.

Birmingham, MI – Parking just got more expensive for those who use the city's public parking decks.

The goal of the rate increase is to encourage office workers in Birmingham from the parking garages to alternative spots, including church lots.
City Engineer Paul O’Meara said the garages are often full during the weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and anyone driving into the city to shop or eat is going to have a tough time finding parking.
The commission also adopted the ad hoc parking committee's recommendation to offer monthly parking permits at a rate discounted by $20 per month.
