Visit the Caribbean with "Once On This Island" Opening Sept 18 at Birminghham Village Players

“Once On This Island is a celebration of blackness, the richness of Caribbean culture and the beauty that Haiti was once known for,” said Director Daniel Valentine. “The heart of Once On This Island is resilience, love, hope, community, and the power of storytelling.”

Valentine is the Director of Once On This Island, the first production of Birmingham Village Players (BVP) 104th season and he has a powerful story to tell.

“Representation matters,” said Valentine. “This is a story that should be true to the culture it comes from so we chose an all-black cast and all the key positions behind the scenes are filled by black professionals. There is so much amazing talent in metro Detroit, but very limited opportunities for audiences to see it. This is a show that lets them shine.”

It’s a musical about a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy and makes a deal with the gods to save his life. It uses the culture, folklore, music, myth and the storytelling traditions of the Caribbean to tell the tale. The musical runs from Sept. 18-Oct. 4 at Birmingham Village Players.
