The athletic footwear and apparel store will open in Birmingham's Woodward Building next summer.

BIRMINGHAM, MI – Kalamazoo-based Gazelle Sports plans to open its fifth athletic footwear and apparel store in Michigan in Birmingham’s Woodward Building next summer.

“Birmingham is just the kind of community that really relates to our product,” co-owner Chris Lampen-Crowell told The Birmingham Eccentric. “We cater to that active person who’s looking for a unique product and has a desire for an awesome experience.”

Gazelle Sports, founded in 1985, offers name-brand products and also holds fitness clinics and sponsors runs and walks in the communities it serves. The small chain opened a store in Northville in 2015, and also has stores in Grand Rapids and Holland. A store in Kalamazoo is temporarily closed for remodeling, according to the company’s website.

The company has been interested in opening a Birmingham store since last year, but was convinced by developers with The Surnow Co. to hold off until the 12,000-square-foot Woodward Building, currently getting a facelift, is ready for occupancy. The building is located at the corner of Maple Road and Pierce.

The store may feature some select merchandise that isn’t available in Gazelle Sports’ other stores.

“We’re very happy with the location,” Lampen-Crowell told the newspaper. “We love everything that’s going on with Pierce – and Maple is already a strip for so many great retailers.”
