Michigan's 13 Billionaires: See the Forbes Ranking

Forbes recently ranked the richest people in the world. Several Michigan individuals and families are on the list.

Supermarket heirs Hank and Doug Meijer are Michigan’s richest billionaires, according to an analysis of the financial worth of the world’s billionaires released by the business magazine Forbes Monday.

According to Forbes, “For our 30th annual guide to the world’s richest, we found 1,810 billionaires, down from a record 1,826 a year ago. Their aggregate net worth was $6.48 trillion, $570 billion less than last year. It was also the first time since 2010 that the average net worth of a billionaire dropped – it is now $3.6 billion, $300 million less than last year.”

The Meijer brothers, co-chairs of the privately held grocery and retail chain founded by their grandfather, are worth $8.2 billion, making them the 139th richest in the world;

Last year, the brothers were worth $10.7 billion and were the 118th richest billionaires in the world.

Also on the list:

  • Franklin businessman Dan Gilbert, who controls about 40 companies led by Detroit-based Quicken Loans Inc. and owns the Cleveland Cavaliers, is Michigan’s second-richest billionaire and the 286th richest person in the world. he is worth $4.9 billion, up from $4.7 billion a year ago.
  • Mike and Marian Ilitch, the Bingham Farms couple who founded the Little Caesars pizza chain and who jointly or singularly own the Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Tigers and MotorCity Casino Hotel, and their family, are worth $4.8 billion, and are the 298th richest billionaires, up from No. 330 last year. Their net worth hasn’t changed.
  • Amway co-founder and Orlando Magic owner Richard DeVos of Holland, worth an estimated $4.7 billion, down from $5.7 billion in 2015. He’s the 259th richest billionaire in the world.
  • Two members of the Stryker family, whose company makes replacement joints and other medical devices, are on the list: Ronda Stryker, of Portage, is worth $3.6 billion — down from $3.7 billion in 2015 — is the 435th richest billionaire in the world. Her brother Jon Stryker, of Kalamazoo, is the 959th richest billionaire and is worth $1.9 billion, down from $2 billion in 2015.
  • Former Stryker CEO John Brown, of Portage, is ranked No. 854th and is worth $2.1 billion. His net worth hasn’t changed in the past year.
  • Manuel "Matty" Moroun of Detroit, whose family controls the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit and several trucking firms, No. 1011, worth $1.8 billion, down from $1.9 billion in 2015.
  • William Young, of Ypsilanti, is new on the list with a net worth of $1.5 billion and No. 1,198 on the list. He founded Plastipak with his father in 1967, sold it to Beatrice Foods for an undisclosed amount six years later, bought it back in 1982 and, three decades later, sold a minority stake to Goldman Sachs.
  • Roger Penske of Birmingham, owner of the Penske Auto Group, No. 1,275 on the list, is worth $1.4 billion, up from $1.3 billion last year.
  • Martha Ford, the widow of the William Clay Ford, grandson of Henry Ford, grandchild of Henry Ford and an owner of the Detroit Lions, is No. 1,367 on the lsit, worth $1.3 billion, down from $1.5 billion last year.
