When Is Opening Day of the Birmingham Farmers Market?

Organic farmers, Commonwealth Cafe, Almond R Nuts and Tree Reform's Jim Leonard join the vendor lineup this year.

BIRMINGHAM, MI – Opening Day for the Birmingham Farmers Market, returning to the city’s public parking lot No. 6 for the 14th consecutive season, is just around the corner.

Opening Day is Sunday, May 1. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to the market, located on the east side of North Old Woodward, across from Salvatore Scallopini Restaurant and just north of Booth Park. Attendees are encouraged to stop by the information booth for free balloons for children throughout Opening Day.

What’s new this year? For starters, two certified organic farmers — East River Organics and Bird Creek Farms — join the vendors this year.

Also new this year, Commonwealth Cafe will be at the market selling bottled iced coffee and packaged whole bean coffee, and a new nut vendor, Almond R Nuts, will feature cinnamon roasted almonds, pecans and cashews.

On the non-edible side, Birmingham resident Jim Leonard will sell his handmade wooden cutting boards and kitchen accessories from his Tree Reform business.

A variety of other new vendors will feature specialty dog treats and baked goods.

“Also new this year, we’re excited to introduce an all new logo and colorful new look as we kick off the 14th season of the market,” Birmingham Shopping District Executive Director John Heiney said.

Several special events are planned this season:

Chef Clash Sunday, June 26: Birmingham’s top chefs will go head-to-head in a cooking competition live at the market

Corn Festival, Sunday, Aug. 14: Special activities will feature all things corn, with special crafts and old-fashioned corn shelling.

Harvest Festival, Sunday, Sept. 18: The bounty of the Michigan harvest will be celebrated, along with a petting farm and antique machinery exhibit.

End of Season Celebration, Sunday, Oct. 23: This event is held in conjunction with the Birmingham Pumpkin Patch & Halloween Parade).

The Birmingham Farmers Market features exclusively Michigan-grown produce, and availability is subject to growing patterns in the state. Fresh baked goods and flowers will be available on Opening Day, but by mid- to late-May, shoppers will find lettuce, kale, rhubarb, asparagus, white onions and sugar peas, as well as spring floral arrangements, potted plants, hanging baskets and flats.

The more than 70 market vendors will feature baked goods, freshly prepared foods, spices, eggs, honey, jams and jellies, fresh meat, poultry, soaps, dog treats. and hand-crafted and decorative items.

The market offers a hometown experience that’s fun for all ages, with fresh prepared foods, live music, a children’s craft area and other attractions.
