$163,850 Wire Transfer Attempted in Home Computer Hack

A Bloomfield Township woman told police someone hacked into her computer and tried to steal tens of thousands of dollars.

A Bloomfield Township woman got a disturbing call from a representative of her bank last week asking if she had authorized a $163,850 transfer from her bank account, police said.

She hadn’t.

Police said in a report Thursday that it appears the woman’s computer had been hacked and infected with a virus.

The case has been turned over to the Bloomfield Township Police Department’s Investigations Division.

The Investigations Unit is pursuing two other cases:

On Oct. 26, officers responded to the 500 block of Weybridge for a larceny from auto report.
The owner of the vehicle reported that sometime during the overnight hours, an unknown suspect stole sunglasses and the garage door opener from a vehicle.

The homeowner said the vehicle was locked, however, police said no damage was found to the vehicle.

Other residents in the Fox Hills Subdivision reported that their unlocked vehicles were rummaged through, but reported nothing was stolen.

On Oct. 28, a homeowner in the 5800 block of Raven reported that he returned home from a business trip and discovered that his home had been broken into and cash, laptops and iPhones had been stolen.

The thefts are believed to have occurred sometime between Oct. 23-28.
