Bloomfield Hills Rivals Team Up For Charity Game

Andover boys basketball partners with Lahser for annual Coaches vs. Cancer game.

The final score won’t be the only number that matters on Friday in Bloomfield Hills.

At the end of the night, both and basketball teams hope to tally up a big number for the American Cancer Society. The Oakland Activities Association Gold division rivals face-off at 7 p.m. on the Barons home court in a Coaches vs. Cancer charity game.

“We’re hopeful we’ll raise somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000,” Andover coach Jeff Rubin said.

Rubin has hosted an annual Coaches vs. Cancer game at Andover for the past six years. The Knights have hosted their own charity game separately. This season, the two Bloomfield schools are partnering up and hosting the game together.

“This is the first year we are doing it in conjunction with Lahser,” Rubin said. “The first year we did it for a Lahser game, that was hosted by us. This year, we are both hosting to maximize the amount of funds we are able to raise.”

Coaches vs. Cancer is a program founded by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to help coaches and teams participate in the fight against cancer by organizing national and local events.

Since the programs inception in 1993, coaches have raised more than $70 million. Nationwide, more than 2,000 college and high school coaches participate annually.

Admission for the game is $5 or fans can buy a t-shirt for free admission.

Fans can purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win various prizes including an autographed Detroit Lions football, Detroit Pistons tickets, an autographed Pistons’ jersey and an autographed Detroit Red Wings’ Hockey Stick.

“All the money goes to the American Cancer Society,” Rubin said.

Friday’s game will be the second meeting between the schools this season. On Jan. 17, Lahser edged out Andover 74-69 in a close contest.

The Knights will try to sweep the season series, but will have to do it without starting point guard Armand Cartwright. The

Lahser is currently tied at the top of the Gold with a 4-1 record in the division (11-4 overall).  Andover will try to play the role of spoiler. On the season, the Barons are 7-8 and 1-4 in the Gold.
