Splash into underwater archaeology with Dr. Ashley Lemke! 💧
Join Cranbrook Institute of Science on Thursday, November 13 for our Women in Science Speaker Series featuring Dr. Ashley Lemke, an archaeologist, author, Explorers Club Fellow, and Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
When you think of underwater archaeology, shipwrecks and sea catastrophes might come to mind—but this field dives much deeper. Beneath the water’s surface lie ancient landscapes and evidence of the plants, animals, and humans that once inhabited them thousands of years ago.
In this speaker series, Dr. Lemke will take us on a journey to 9,000-year-old submerged sites in the North American Great Lakes, once coastal lands exposed at the end of the last Ice Age. 🐚
As an expert on submerged ancient sites, Dr. Lemke has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and has directed research in the Great Lakes, Atlantic Ocean, Germany, Spain, Romania, and Serbia.
Together, we’ll discover how these underwater worlds contribute to the global archaeological record and uncover the unique stories they tell about the past. 🌎
This Women in Science Speaker Series is recommended for ages 12 and up.
