Design & Renovation Trends for 2014

Pantone recently announced the "color of the year" for 2014 - Radiant Orchid. A beautiful bold, yet pastel purple-pink color. Hmmm - hard to describe the color! No matter, a quick search will bring it up on your computer. Did you look at it? Kinda hard to incorporate with other colors tastefully. Other hot trends in interior design include:

  1. A return to glam with shiny & sparkle accents.
  2. Hair on hide is moving from rugs to upholstery and walls.
  3. Copper and hammered brass fixtures and accents.
  4. Jewel-toned Cabinets.
  5. Fringe & Feathers. (Really)
  6. Bold countertops - think agate and malachite.
All of the above sound fun - some more whimsical than others. Be careful though, some trends are very short lived. What looks fresh now can look dated in a couple of months. We find it is best to pick one or two things to love and incorporate them with accents to stay both timeless and on trend.

On the renovation side of things, there is great news for homeowners. The 2013 cost vs. value report from Remodeler Magazine shows significant gains over the past year. Some projects are at or above pre-recession levels and all have gained strength in the new housing market. As always, projects with the greatest return on investment are replacement projects like windows, siding or entry/garage doors. A small investment in a pretty entry door can really pay off. Bathrooms, kitchens and basements continue to be well worth the investment, but the highest non-replacement return was for a nice deck!

Bringing tastefully executed trends together with sustainable materials and a universally designed space in a way that makes the home more comfortable and easy to maintain for many years to come is the new normal in the remodeling/renovation industry. More than a trend, it is the way successful companies will thrive - by addressing all of the variables that go into any project in a thoughtful, holistic manner.
