Former Andover Student Marks Milestone With Georgia State Volleyball

Vineece Verdun surpasses 1,000 kills in collegiate competition and is closing in on school history.

Former Andover High School volleyball standout Vineece Verdun surpassed a milestone with her 1,000th kill in collegiate competition during a dominating performance for Georgia State University on Sunday.

Verdun, a redshirt senior from Bloomfield Hills, scored 14 kills in a four-set victory over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) powerhouse James Madison University, notching her 1,002 for her career. She now has exactly 900 kills as a Panther, placing her just 33 kills away from the university's all-time top 10 list, according to a news release from the athletic department. Verdun got her first 102 kills as a Michigan State University Spartan in 2008 before transferring.

If she continues her current pace, she could land as high as fifth on the school's all-time attack percentage.

Named the 2011 CAA Preseason Player of the Year in September, Verdun hasn't disappointed. Along with the kills this season, she has racked up 1,448 attack attempts, 780 points and 200 total blocks in only two full seasons at the school, according to the GSU Athletics website. She is only the second player in GSU history to be named first team all-CAA.

According to the school's athletic department, Verdun is also matching her performance on the court in the classroom. She's the first player in school history to earn conference scholar-athlete of the year award for volleyball and twice recognized by the conference commissioner for academic achievement.

The Panthers are 12-15 overall, but 6-4 in conference and two games out of first play. After Sunday's performance, they are positioned to win a berth in next month's conference tournament if they can win a few of the four matches they have left.
