Former Lion, Andover Coach Lomas Brown Apologizes to Scott Mitchell

Former Detroit Lion All-Pro and Andover High School assistant coach Lomas Brown used his spot on national television Thursday to apologize to former teammate Scott Mitchell for recent comments that caused a firestorm regarding a 1994 game. 

Brown, an 18-year NFL veteran and occassional analyst on ESPN's NFL Live spent the majority of his segment Thursday evening apologizing for intentionally letting an opponent by him in order to get the former Lion quarterback hurt.

"I was upset and let that get the best of me. And I can’t do nothing but apologize for it now," he said during the live studio visit broadcast shortly after 8 p.m.

Mitchell injured his finger and left the game against the Green Bay Packers. Brown recently admitted that he let a Packer get a free shot at the embattled and struggling quarterback, the Detroit Free Press reported. Mitchell said he was surprised and disappointed in comments published Wednesday.

“It just really hurt,” Mitchell told Mike Florio on the "Dan Patrick Show," according to profootballtalk.com. “It was extremely disappointing. I’m really shocked by it, to be honest."

"For him to do that is just reprehensible, beyond words. When you mess with my family, mess with my livelihood, mess with my health, it’s unacceptable. It’s B.S."

Brown, who lives in the Bloomfield Hills Schools district, was among those praised by school and administration officials for helping keep the Andover varsity football program afloat when it wasn't clear that the Barons could field a team for the final season in school history.

The team lost its first three games by a combined score of 184-20, and when just a dozen players showed for practice in September, administrators forfeited the rest of the season and shut the program down. Andover and Lahser High School will merge into the new Bloomfield Hills High School next fall.

During Thursday's segment on NFL Live, Brown said he'd personally reach out to Mitchell and apologize, though he candidly admitted that at the time, he wasn't so sorry.

"I look back and I say 'was I sorry when it happened then?' . . . If I was sitting  here being honest with you, no I wasn’t back then," he explained. "But I’ve had time to think about it. And, you know, it was the wrong thing, the wrong actions for me to take."

"I was younger, when you’re younger you do a lot o things that when look back you know were not the right things to do."
