Highlight Reel: Andover Varsity Soccer Stays Hot, Football Teams Suffer Losses

The Barons playing well on the soccer field while Lahser football suffers a set back.

It was a busy week in Bloomfield sports, with wins from the Andover soccer team and a loss by the Lahser football team on Friday.

Varsity Boys Soccer

Andover

The varsity soccer team is doing its best to keep pace in the Oakland Activities Association White division with Farmington and Avondale. The Barons played three division games this week and won all three of them.

And by the way, two of them were shutout victories.

On Monday, the Barons dropped Berkley 3-0 to start the week out. Nick Shabino picked up a hat trick in the first half and that was all Andover needed to pick up the win.

The Barons then had back-to-back games against Groves on Tuesday and Thursday. In the first game at home they beat the Falcons 2-0 and then won 2-1 on the road two days later.

Andover will now take a four game win streak into their game with Berkley next Tuesday at home.

Brother Rice, Detroit Country Day

In other soccer action, grabbed an early lead in the Catholic League Central Division with a 2-0 win over University of Detroit Jesuit on Tuesday. It was only the second division game of the season for the Warriors, who now have a 1-0-1 record in the Central Division.

On Thursday night, soccer squads from Detroit Country Day and Brother Rice faced off in a big game. Both teams are two of the top ranked teams in the teams’ respective division and the game didn’t disappoint.

The Warriors lost 2-1 lost in a well-played game against the Yellowjackets. Yellowjackets senior Tariq Akeel scored on a penalty kick to tie the game 1-1 early in the second half and then he set up Oliver Harris for the game-winning goal.

Varsity Football

Lahser

The Lahser varsity football team suffered a bit of a let down on Friday night.

While the team had a big win over Seaholm last week, the Knights lost a stunner, 41-13, to North Farmington on Friday night. Running backs Kevin Miller and Jacquis Woods combined for over 350 yards rushing to help hand the Knights their first loss of the season.

The Raiders' win drops Lahser into a tie for first place in the OAA Blue with Groves.

Andover

Andover is still searching for its first win after week four. The team lost at Berkley on Friday 26-7. Berkley's Omar Sitto led the charge for the Bears with over 150 yards. The Barons have now started the season with four straight losses the past four seasons.

Detroit Country Day

Meanwhile, Detroit Country Day made it two wins in a row on Friday with a 34-3 win over Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.

John Hill had two touchdowns and over 110 yards in the win. It was the second consecutive week where Hill had a pair of rushing touchdowns to help the Yellowjackets win. Their record on the season is now 2-2.

Varsity Swimming

Lahser, Andover

The girls swimmers from Lahser and Andover struggled this week.

Seaholm put together a lopsided victory over Lahser at a meet on Thursday, beating the Knights 133-50. The win improved the Maples' overall record to 4-0 on the season. 

The highlight for Lahser at the meet was Mary Pilibosian, who picked up two individual wins, winning the 100 meter backstroke and the 200 meter individual medley.

Andover girls swmming lost on Thursday as well. The Barons dropped their meet to Stoney Creek 115-71.  Sarah Kilbride picked up a win in the 200 meter individual medley, but Stoney Creek won the meet by outperforming Andover in the relay races.
