Highlight Reel: Tough Losses For Football and Soccer Teams

The Knights and Barons football teams fell in OAA Blue games on Friday and both soccer teams struggled as well.

Varsity Football

Andover

Another week; another heartbreaking loss for the Andover varsity football team.

The Barons hosted Groves and nearly came back to win in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from quarterback Winston Urwiller to Jaurrezz Smith. Down 28-27, they went for the win, but couldn't convert a two-point conversion.

Urwiller’s best game of the season wasn’t enough to stop the Falcons from winnings their fourth game in a row. They stayed tied at the top of the Oakland Activities Association Blue division with Avondale.

Lahser

In a game that wasn’t very close, Lahser lost for a second straight time on Friday night, 42-15 at Berkley's homecoming game. Omar Sitto had a solid night for the Bears running the ball, but it was his defense that really made an impact. The team forced six turnovers to drop Lahser back to the middle of the pack in the OAA Blue at 3-2 on the season.

Brother Rice

The Warriors responded this week after its first loss of the season.

The team played University of Detroit Jesuit in a game at Hurley Field Saturday and won convincingly 42-7. They've beaten the Cubs every year since 1999 and are now 4-1 (1-1 Catholic League Central).

Detroit Country Day

Detroit Country Day is now over .500 with its 35-7 win Friday night over Belleville at Eastern Michigan University. The Yellowjackets have put their early season struggles behind them and won three straight games by a margin of victory of 28 points or more. At 3-2, the Yellowjackets have already lost more games than last year, but their recent success has them looking like a playoff team again.

Varsity Volleyball

Marian

Marian opened up its 2011 Catholic League Central schedule last week on Thursday with a win over Warren Regina in three sets (25-10, 25-11, 25-14). Senior Kaleigh Pohlman led the way over Regina with nine kills in the victory.

The Mustangs have won the Catholic League eight of the past 10 years and are looking to regain the title after dropping the championship match to Farmington Hills Mercy last season.

Varsity Girls Golf

Marian

The Mustangs extended their undefeated record this season on Thursday with a win over Macomb Lutheran North.

Marian won 191 to 193 at the par 36 Carcklewood Golf Course behind three scores of eight over par or better. Ellen Manson shot a 41, Macy Hudson shot a 42 and Kelly Lunghamer shot a 44. All three scores were better than the top score North had on the afternoon.

Varsity Boys Soccer

Neither Lahser or Andover had a good week on the soccer field.

In a key OAA White game, the Barons were shut out on Tuesday 1-0 by Berkley. Eric Towns scored in the first half and that was all the Bears needed to head home with the win. The teams are at the top of the division along with Farmington and Avondale. Berkley is 4-3-1 while Andover is 5-3.

Lahser has now lost four games in a row with its two losses last week. It dropped a game to Adams 1-0 on Tuesday and then lost to Farmington on Thursday 2-1.

Generating offense has been the big problem for the Knights. They’ve only scored two goals once in their last six games.
