National Police Week: Metro Detroit Police, Citizen Awards

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is hosting its annual Awards Day Ceremony Wednesday, May 18.

Citizen heroes and law enforcement personnel from across Metro Detroit will be honored Wednesday during National Police Week by the Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

The annual Awards Day Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Auditorium,1200 N. Telegraph Road, Building 12 East, Pontiac.

Honorees will include citizens and law enforcement personnel from the metro area in a moving tribute to those who have in some way made a difference in their community through heroic acts or deeds.

The Oakland County awards ceremony is one of hundreds of events taking place across the country during National Police Week, May 15-21.

National Police Week has been observed since 1962, but the first public memorial service wasn’t held until 1982. Thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers take part in the series of events in Washington, DC, each year.

At the Oakland County ceremony Wednesday, law enforcement and other governmental representatives will be honored for distinguished service from the following agencies:

Federal Bureau of Investigation, Michigan Department of Corrections, Michigan State Police, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Oakland County Gang and Violent Crime Task Force, Detroit and Southeastern Michigan Information and Intelligence Center, and the Department of Homeland Security.

Also, Addison Township Fire Department, Bloomfield Township Police Department, Brandon Township Fire Department, Detroit Township, Farmington Hills Township, Ferndale Township, Hazel Park Township, Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, Orion Township Fire Department, Roseville Township, Royal Oak Township, St. Clair Shores Township, Southfield Township, Star EMS, Sterling Heights Township, Troy Township, Waterford Township Township, and West Bloomfield Township.

Citizens from the following areas will also be honored: Addison Township, Independence Township, Orion Township, Waterford Township, city of Rochester Hills, Springfield Township, Oxford Township, city of Pontiac, city of Mt. Clemens, Highland Township, city of South Lyon and city of Tucson, AZ.
