Nonprofit Jobs That Reflect MLK's Legacy: Patch Jobs Board

The bottom line is different. For-profit companies look at financial bottom lines; nonprofits seek to have a positive effect.

METRO DETROIT – Much of the nation will pause Monday to honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The national holiday has become synonymous with service, and across the country, people will be volunteering by painting walls, serving meals, reading to kids, shoring up vacant lots to make it safer for kids to get to school each day and in countless other activities.

For some people, service is a full-time job. Some nonprofits pay competitively with the private sector; others don’t, but compensate with benefits and other job perks.

“The biggest difference is that there’s a different bottom line,” U.S. News & World Report wrote in its “Money” section. “In business, the ultimate goal is to make a profit. For nonprofits, the goal is to have a positive effect in the world. And staff members are generally expected to share that perspective, which can sometimes translate into longer hours and pitching in wherever you’re needed to help advance the mission. But staff members often derive an enormous sense of personal fulfillment from their work (particularly if the organization is well-run and getting results).”

Here are some nonprofit and philanthropy jobs from the Patch Jobs Board:
