Olympic Ice Dancer Meryl Davis Owns the Night on Week 4 of 'DWTS'

It was Switch-Up Week on ABC’s ballroom reality competition “Dancing With The Stars.” That meant new partners for Michigan’s favorite competitors, Olympic gold medal ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

White and his new partner for the night, Peta Murgatroyd, danced a Rumba.

Head judge Len Goodman said that “as a performance, it is terrific,” but it wasn’t a Rumba and was “all posed and jerky.”

“It was not a Rumba, it was like a contemporary routine.”

Guest Judge Julianne Hough was less critical. “I thought it was absolutely stunning,” she said. “You are a mother’s dream. I love you so much.”

But then she added, “You’re kinda on your heels and back-weighted. When you go on the balls of your feet, that is grounded.”

“I love the grand and heroic sweep,” judge Bruno Tonioli said. You had that kinda grand intention – clean lines – but if you don’t get your feet right, your hips won’t ignite. I thought it was a majestic performance.”

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said there was “no question” that White is a marvelous dancer. “But I agree with Len,” she said. “It was not the Rumba.”

Inaba scored the dance with a 7, Goodman with an 8, and Hough and Tonioli each gave it a 9, for a total score of 33 of 40 possible points.

As far as the Michigan ice dancers are concerned, the night again belonged to Davis, who danced the Argentine Tango with Val Chmerkovskiy.

“A little too much posy here and there, but that was the dance of the night,” Goodman said.

“You are one of the most stunning dancers I’ve ever seen,” Hough raved. “I wish I danced just like you. Perfection!”

“Powerful and seductive,” Tonioli said. “Two magical instruments. Fabulous.”

“Tonight was a wonderful night, but you two are in a class of your own,” Inaba gushed. “You two are untouchable.”

Goodman gave the duo a 9, but each of the other three judges gave them a 10, for a composite score of 39 out of 40 possible points.

When the show returns next Monday for Week 5, White teams again with Sharna Burgess and Davis with Maks Chmerkovskiy. Another round of eliminations will come next week with scores from the past two weeks combed with audience support to determine who stays and who goes.
