Outrun Hunger Race Sets Higher Goals to Feed the Hungry
Grace Community Church's partnering charities, Hospitality House and Open Door Outreach, say demand for hot holiday meals exceeds supply.

Registration is under way for Grace Community Church’s Outrun Hunger, an annual 5K race to raise enough money to feed 100 families during the holiday season.

The 2014 race will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, in Commerce.
Race organizers donate 100 percent of the proceeds to two charities, and also receive support from local businesses that donate time and services for the race.

Last year, 323 participated in the race, which raised more than $10,675 for the partnering charities, Hospitality House in Walled Lake and Open Door Outreach in Watford. The proceeds were enough to provide hot meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas for 533 Lakes Region families.

That’s not enough, Outrun Hunger director Kari Colter said in an email.
“They feed … thousands during the holidays, so the demand is high,” often overwhelming the suply, she said.
As a result, race organizers hope to feed more families this year.
The race allows the church to be “a catalyst for ‘outrunning hunger’ in the Lakes Region of southeast Michigan,” according to the race website
