Users of popular messaging app Kik are being extorted.

(Originally posted on Dec. 16, 2016) BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — Parents, if your kids are into the messaging app Kik, Bloomfield Township Police want you to know about some recent “sextortion” attempts, The Birmingham Eccentric reported.

“We’ve had a couple of incidents over the past few weeks,” Det. Lt. Dan Edwards said. “We want parents to know about it because many of these types of cases involve younger kids who are experimenting.”

Edwards said online predators use the app because users remain anonymous.

The police department took a report Dec. 9 from a 24-year-old victim who connected with another individual on Kik and sent compromising photos after a brief text message conversation. That's when the victim began getting demands for credit card information and threats the photos would be posted on social media if the information wasn't sent.

The victim's parents filed a police report after discovering what was happening.
