When he looks around at the members of his football squad at Bloomfield Hills’ exclusive Cranbrook-Kingswood, a private prep and boarding school commanding tuition rates of $30,200 to $41,300, Coach Joe D’Angelo sees young men who have had privileged lives.

He had been looking for some character-building exercises off the gridiron, and charities helping metro residents recover from severe flooding Aug. 11-13 offered what seemed to be a perfect fit.

“These young men are pretty blessed here,” D’Angelo told WJBK-Channel 2. “It’s an opportunity for them to give a little bit back.”

  • Are there other flood recovery needs that haven’t been met, or won’t be met with the recent presidential disaster declaration, that volunteers can help with?

Today and Saturday, they’re stepping into another world and donating their time and brawn to help deliver new furniture to flood victims for several charities, including Focus: HOPE, the American Red Cross of Southeast Michigan and Jewish Family Services of Metro Detroit.

One of the student athletes, Joseph Files, said volunteer service is important.

“I feel it’s important to help in the community, especially those who are less fortunate than us,” Files said. “It’s a great opportunity to represent our school and our team in a way that can really benefit the community.”

If you want to lend a hand, more volunteers are needed today and Saturday. Just show up at the Focus: HOPE warehouse at 1355 Oakman Blvd. in Detroit.
