Suspect 'Lurking' Near Bloomfield Businesses Arrested: Police

Police say a man charged with larceny for allegedly stealing a wallet after pretending to need directions is suspected in other incidents.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI – A suspect in a string of larcenies was arrested last week by Bloomfield Township police after he allegedly stole a woman’s wallet under the ruse that he needed directions to a dentist’s office.

Alford Young, 54, of Pontiac,was arrested after police were called to the business in the area of Square Lake and Woodward around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 22.

An employee of the business said a man, later identified as young, had come in earlier in the day asking for directions to a dentistry office, according to the report. She gave the directions, then left the room.

Young left, too, but police said he had returned to the office. When the employee discovered him, he said the dentist office was closed and abruptly left.

Minutes later, the employee discovered her wallet was missing from her purse. Witnesses said Young entered a neighboring business, and police said they found him in the bathroom, along with the woman’s wallet.

Police said Young, a suspect in other larcenies, matches the description of a man who had been seek “lurking around businesses.”

When officers arrested Young on larceny charges, “he admitted to stealing the wallet but denied any prior larcenies,” police said.

Young was arraigned in 52/3 District Court by Magistrate Marie Soma, who set a conditional cash bond of $5,000.
