Couldn’t catch up to everything that happened in Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills last week? No worries, Patch has some of the highlights:
- Top schools: The week started off with news late Monday that all three high schools in the Bloomfield Hills Schools district placed in Newsweek magazine’s top 500 schools in the country. The International Academy placed 20th and was the top rated school of all the 16 entries from Michigan. Bloomfield Hills Andover placed 101 and Bloomfield Hills Lahser was ranked 260.
- Library decision: On Tuesday, the Bloomfield Township Library Board upheld the decision to prohibit borrowing for non-township residents if they are from communities without a reciprocal borrowing agreement, starting July 1. The policy, adopted in April, was upheld despite some objections from the community and the Baldwin Public Library.
- Eagle Scout: Andrew Thomas was the latest Bloomfield Patch Whiz Kid; he received local and national recognition for his long history of volunteerism through the Boy Scouts of America. Thomas, 18, became an Eagle Scout, the organization’s highest honor, for his leadership and ability to plan a cleanup project for elderly or disabled Ferndale residents.
- NBA drafts Country Day grad: In the highly anticipated NBA Draft Detroit Country Day graduate Keith Benson made history by becoming Oakland University’s first-ever player selected. Our coverage included insights from Kurt Keener, Benson’s former coach at Country Day and commentary on how Grizzlies head coach Greg Kampe saw the potential that other Division I schools missed.
- Police news: We rounded out the week with the latest in police news from both the Bloomfield Township Police Department and the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety. Highlights included a stern warning from police to lock your vehicles and secure valuables inside after a rash of auto break-ins on Dell Rose Drive, Kemp Street, and East Hammond Lake Road. In Bloomfield Hills, police cited a woman for marijuana possession after finding a baggie containing the drug inside a vehicle that ran off Lahser Road.
- Young artist honored: On Friday we also featured Harrison Noh, an International Academy student that has his artwork on display at the U.S. Capitol as winner of the 9th District’s Congressional Arts Competition.
