Andover Homecoming Football Game Could Be School's Last

Graduating seniors and dwindling interest could close the chapter on Andover's varsity football program a full year before consolidation.

There's much to do over the weekend in and around the Bloomfield area. And since it's tough to always plan ahead, Patch is here to help.

Why Go: The Barons remain winless despite being competitive in nearly every game thus far this season. The task to avoid 0-8 doesn't get much easier with North Farmington (5-2) coming into Baron Field riding a five-game win streak.

With the planned merger of Andover and Lahser high schools slated for 2013, this game was already going to be among the final homecoming contests in school history. But it could very well be the last.

Superintendent Rob Glass said at last Thursday's school board meeting that the school's varsity football program was at risk for 2012 because it may not be able to field a team. Already short-handed at 21 players, there may not be more than 17 students on next year's roster. Glass vowed not to let that happen without considerable effort. He said district staff is meeting internally to address the issue and welcomes ideas from residents.

"We're not giving up without a fight," he said. "We're doing extensive investigation into what we can do to make changes."

Nevertheless, students are preparing for this year's dance from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, with the theme of "Andover through the Decades," by participating in several events to enhance school spirit and raise funds for prom.
