Popular Detroit-Area Beach Closed Due To High E. Coli Levels

WHITMORE LAKE, MI — Officials have closed Independence Lake beach in Whitmore Lake due to high levels of E. coli bacteria.

Officials said the bacteria was found through routine testing.

The closure is effective immediately and will remain in place until further tests show a drop in bacteria levels deemed safe for swimming, Washtenaw County officials said.

While the beach is closed for swimming, other recreational activities, such as fishing, are allowed, officials said.

Officials did not list a pollution source, but E. coli can make its way into bodies of water through animal waste and sewage. The bacterium is commonly found in the digestive systems of mammals and birds.

E. coli symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Infections can be severe and lead to life-threatening or chronic conditions.

Officials asked anyone who believes they may have become ill after swimming at the beach to call the Washtenaw County Environmental Health Division at (734) 222-3800 during normal business hours.
