Genoa Township resident Alexa Spaanstra placed second with a time of 1:00.59 at the Hershey’s National Track & Field Games. Click here for official results. Alexa is a four time national qualifier and when asked how it felt to qualify again Alexa said “it was a great honor because I wasn’t expecting it. I was able to experience some great things, and I was confident because I have been there before”. Alexa trains with her father and the Ann Arbor track club and she chose the 400 meter race because she is too young for the mile. Her plan for next year is to “try to run the mile and work on longer distances”.

The Hershey’s Track & Field Games help “get kids on the right track, teaching lifelong lessons, and having fun every step, leap, jump and throw along the way”. These games are the largest youth program of its kind in North America. In order to get to Nationals, competitors have to go through a rigorous process and qualify at the local, district and then state level first. From there they travel to Hershey Pennsylvania and compete for the Gold and free events at Hershey Park. Everyone between the ages of 9-14 has a chance to participate in the games next year! Anybody interested should contact the SELCRA office or visit our website for more information.

Congratulations and good luck at the games next year!
