Brighton State Police Bust Marijuana Operation

A trooper discovered basement grow rooms while investigating a burglary in Iosco Township; 77 pounds of pot were among the items seized.

Police seized five long guns, 97 marijuana plants, 77 pounds of processed marijuana, prescription narcotics and $2,500 in cash from an Iosco Township home Friday.

According to Sgt. Mark Thompson of the Michigan State Police-Brighton Post, Trooper Mike Moorman was investigating a 54-year-old Iosco Township man for the burglary of a nearby vacant house on Thursday.

While interviewing the burglary suspect at his home, Thompson said, "he noticed indicators of an illegal marijuana operation, most notably the pungent smell of raw marijuana."

Moorman, a 20-year police veteran, obtained a search warrant for the home on the 9200 block of Lamoreaux Road, where the suspect lived with his wife and two children.

He also contacted LAWNET Team-3, a multijurisdictional undercover narcotics team, for assistance.

On Friday, they searched the home and discovered the grow operation, police said.

"The grow operation was in the basement with three different rooms," Thompson said.

The investigation continues and arrest warrants will be sought from the Livingston County prosecutor, Thompson said.

"LAWNET will seek warrants for at the least the husband and wife," he said.

The man also remains a possible suspect in the burglary of the home on the 10000 block of Iosco Road, Thompson said. The house had a fire in December and was empty, Thompson said.

"That investigation is continuing," he said.

Police are not releasing the suspect's name or any other information at this time.
